Watch this video before accepting any training methodology

Before you get a puppy. Before you do anything else with a dog, before you buy into any training philosophy or methodology, you SIMPLY MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO. I was reading a story on MSNBC the other day about how more and more women are choosing to have babies in their own homes, without the presence of medical personnel because the medical establishment has turned pregnancy “into disease that must be managed.”

The same thing has happened with Puppy Raising. Dog experts in the past 20-30 years have turned puppies into a disease, into a disaster that needs to be controlled, confined, contained and fixed. Not the birth of puppies, but the actual puppies themselves.

There’s nothing wrong with a puppy. A puppy is an opportunity, not a problem. An opportunity to change your life and to change the world. A puppy is a bundle of energy and optimism and enthusiasm. The only thing that can screw that up is you, or the dog trainer or the dog training book or methodology or ideology you are using.  All I’m asking you to do is to think twice before you implement any philosophy. Look at what I’ve done with almost no effort with a pit bull type puppy that went through two homes before she got to me.  And I did it effortlessly.

The entire story of Jackie’s first year (aka The American Puppy Project) will be available in a documentary format in 2010. Until then, stay tuned for more about her. Thanks for watching!

I loved this video. Your dog is adorable and I am soooooo jealous that you were able to start with him from puppyhood. All of my dogs were adopted as adults and came with behavioral baggage. From one positive trainer to another, keep up the good work and post more videos- especially if you do work with dog reactivity (the main issue I see on the “Dog Screamer” ….err Dog Whisperer). If you do, film before and after shots paying special attention to the lack of stress signals such as lip licking, yawning, paw raises, blown pupils, sweaty paws, stress panting, etc. Then compare it to a clip of Cesar “rehabilitating” a dog with a simliar issue. Note the lack of aggressive response and talk about the role that hormones play when rehabilitating – you never want to spike the level of cortisol and adrenoline in the dog’s bloodstream- because that reduces the effectiveness of CC and D.

Good Luck! We need more men in the positive dog training field.
